The North High School Engagement Center (NEC) works in partnership with North High School to support students who have gaps in their education. NEC also accepts students from other area schools and students who are not in DPS. NEC serves older students (those who should be juniors, seniors or high school graduates) who need additional support to get back on track. We are committed to assisting all students in overcoming obstacles while allowing them to continue in a comprehensive high school setting with strong core courses, including concurrent enrollment. Students also have access to world languages, technical courses, Advanced Placement and enrichment courses on the North High School main campus or NEC and EGC. Students at NEC are able to benefit from the intentional focus on developing positive relationships with students and from the small class sizes that allow teachers to individualize instruction for students. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in all North High School sports teams, clubs, and extracurricular activities. Students who apply to NEC are behind in credits; therefore, we offer courses on a quarterly basis to accelerate learning and getting back on track to reach graduation. Attendance is a priority due to the pace of learning in our program. Finally, NEC does offer supported GED preparation for students who are at severe risk of dropping out. NEC meets the needs of the whole child by offering a differentiated learning environment with the ability to accelerate course completion rates with flexible scheduling, targeted interventions, reduced class size and individualized instruction based upon student data. In addition to a unique approach to academics, we also provide numerous wrap-around supports to meet the social-emotional needs of the whole child such as counseling, college and career support, small groups, addiction and relationship therapy and access to community resources.
